Your GI Bill Usage
Remaining Entitlement
Tuition value assumes 100% tier in-state public tuition coverage. MHA is not paid during breaks. Actual remaining value may vary.
Smart Ways to Stretch Your Remaining Benefits
📅 Use Tuition Assistance (TA) First
If you're still on active duty, use DoD Tuition Assistance (up to $4,500/year) for in-service courses. Save your GI Bill months for after separation when you'll also get the tax-free housing stipend.
📚 Stack With CLEP / AP Credits
CLEP tests and AP credits can count toward your degree without using GI Bill months. Earning 15 credit hours this way can save you an entire semester of entitlement.
🎓 Enroll Full-Time, Always
Part-time enrollment reduces your MHA but the months still count the same. Full-time enrollment maximizes your housing stipend per month used — unless you have scheduling constraints.
💡 Don't Drop Classes Mid-Semester
Dropping a course mid-term still charges you those GI Bill months. The VA may also create a debt for tuition already paid. Plan your schedule before the semester starts.
🏠 Choose Your School Location Strategically
Your MHA is set by the school's ZIP code. Two schools with identical tuition can have a $1,000+/month difference in housing allowance based on location.
🔄 Transfer Unused Months to Dependents
If you have unused months and won't use them yourself, consider transferring to a spouse or child — must be done while still on active duty with 4+ years remaining.
