What Is the ASVAB?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-choice test used by all U.S. military branches to determine enlistment eligibility and job qualification. Your AFQT score (derived from four subtests) determines which branches you can join. Your individual subtest scores determine which jobs (MOS/ratings) you qualify for.

The test takes approximately 3 hours and is administered at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) or at certain schools through the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. You can retake the ASVAB — but there are mandatory waiting periods between attempts.
