Why This Site Exists
Built by a Navy veteran, for his own son, because the straight answers were harder to find than they should have been.
The Short Version
Military Prep Hub was built by Adam, a U.S. Navy veteran who served six years.
I got out for one reason. I had started a family, and I missed the birth of my first child. I wanted to be home for the rest of it. Apart from that, I loved every minute of my time in the Navy, and I would tell anyone considering service the same thing.
Serving is genuinely worth it, and it genuinely costs you things. You should know both before you sign anything.
How It Started
I started writing these guides when my own son began researching enlistment. I expected the information to be easy to find. It was not.
What I found instead was recruiting material dressed up as advice, forum posts from a decade ago, and very little that simply answered the question in front of me. Pay tables without explanation. Eligibility rules that contradicted each other. Long pages that never quite said the thing.
He ships for boot camp this fall.
So this is the resource I wanted for him, written the way I would explain it across a kitchen table.
How We Research
Everything here starts with official sources: the Department of Defense, DFAS, the VA, and the branches themselves. Where a fact comes from a specific regulation or publication, we link to it so you can check it yourself.
- When something varies by branch, we say so. A great deal of military information is presented as universal when it is not.
- When something changes year to year, we date it. Pay, standards, and policy move. A 2019 answer is often the wrong answer.
- When we do not know, we say that. Waiver outcomes in particular depend on individual circumstances, and anyone who quotes you an approval rate is guessing.
- We do not invent statistics. If there is no reliable number, we describe what is actually known instead of manufacturing precision.
What We Are Not
We are not affiliated with the Department of Defense or any branch of the U.S. military. Nothing here is official policy, and nobody at this site can approve, deny, or influence anything about your enlistment.
We are not recruiters, and no branch pays us to point you toward it. If a page reads like it is selling you something, we have failed at the one thing this site is for.
Your recruiter is the authority on your specific situation, and your contract is the only document that binds anyone. Read it. Ask questions until the answers make sense. Our guide on questions to ask a recruiter exists for exactly that conversation.
How This Site Is Funded
Some pages contain affiliate links, mostly to books and training gear. If you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Those links are disclosed on the pages that carry them.
They never change what we recommend, and we leave them off entirely on pages about pay, eligibility, and policy, where a product recommendation has no business being.
