Military Color Blind Test

Practice the same two-stage screen MEPS runs: dot plates first, then a lantern test if the plates flag you. Then see which jobs a color deficiency actually affects, because it is far fewer than people assume.

Color Vision Screening Test

This is practice, not a diagnosis. Screen color depends on your display, your brightness, the light in your room, and any night mode or blue light filter you have running. No web page can replace the test a technician gives you at MEPS, and nothing here goes in your record. Use it to find out whether this is worth worrying about before you are standing at the station.

Before you start

Three things, then we begin

Turn your screen brightness up. Turn off night mode, dark mode tinting, and any blue light filter, they shift exactly the colors this test depends on. Sit somewhere with normal room light rather than direct sun on the screen, and look at each plate for a few seconds without straining.

Stage one is 14 dot plates, scored against the real 12 of 14 pass mark. If you fall short, stage two is a lantern simulation, which is what MEPS gives you when the plates flag you. Both stages are generated fresh every time, so the numbers are different on a second run.

No, Color Blindness Does Not Disqualify You

It is the most misunderstood line in the medical standard, and recruiters field this question constantly.

DoDI 6130.03, the instruction that sets medical standards for military service, does not set a pass or fail color vision bar for enlistment. It hands color vision to each Service to define. There is no single DoD-wide color vision standard, and there is no rule that turns a color deficient applicant away at the door.

What color vision decides is which job you can hold. Some roles depend on reading color correctly under pressure, and those are closed or waiver-gated. Most roles have no color vision requirement at all. Around 8 to 10 percent of men have some form of color vision deficiency, so roughly one in twelve men walking into MEPS is in this position, and the services are not in the habit of turning away one in twelve applicants.

The one place to be realistic is aviation. Pilot and flight officer roles require normal color vision in every branch, and there is no waiver for them anywhere. If flying is the entire reason you are enlisting, this test is worth taking seriously today rather than at the station.

Color Vision Standards, Branch by Branch

Every service sets its own standard, its own test sequence, and its own waiver authority.

Coast Guard Plates, 10 of 14 pass mark. A hard stop for Coast Guard Academy candidates, with no waiver available. The strictest standard of the six.
Space Force Follows Air Force practice. No separately published accession color vision standard. Expect Air Force treatment for most fields. Confirm with a recruiter rather than assuming, since this one is genuinely thin on published guidance.

Two separate pipelines get confused constantly. Enlisted applicants are screened at MEPS under USMEPCOM standards. Academy, ROTC and other officer candidates are screened by DoDMERB, which is where the branch specific pass marks above come from. Newer computer based tests, the Rabin Cone Contrast Test and the Waggoner CCVT, are replacing plates in parts of both pipelines. Verify anything here with a recruiter before you make a decision on it.

Which Jobs This Actually Affects

The restricted list is shorter than the rumor. Specific titles and codes vary by branch and change over time.

Color Vision and Enlistment, Answered

Is color blindness an automatic disqualification?

No. DoDI 6130.03 sets no pass or fail color vision bar for enlistment and leaves the standard to each Service. A deficiency limits which jobs you can hold, not whether you can serve. Aviation is the firm exception, and it carries no waiver in any branch.

What test does MEPS actually give me?

Pseudoisochromatic plates first, the dot patterns with a number inside. Applicants who fail are moved to a secondary test, usually the Farnsworth Lantern Test on the OPTEC 900, where you name pairs of red, green and white signal lights. Army applicants who fail that are then given an Army vivid red/green test.

I failed the plates. Is that it?

No, and this is the single most important thing to know walking in. The plate screen has a high false positive rate, reported near 50 percent, which is exactly why a secondary test exists. Passing the lantern reopens most of what a plate failure would have closed. A technician telling you the plates flagged you is describing step one, not a verdict.

Can I wear EnChroma or other color correcting glasses to pass?

No. Color vision testing is done on your uncorrected color perception and enhancing lenses are not permitted during the exam. Trying it puts your whole medical file in question over a standard that exists because some of these jobs are genuinely dangerous to do wrong. If you want one of the restricted jobs, the honest route is the secondary test, which exists precisely to catch people the plates get wrong.

Can I retake the test if I fail?

Color vision is a stable physical trait, so unlike a vision acuity issue there is nothing to correct or wait out. Retesting is at the discretion of the medical staff and is generally reserved for cases where the testing conditions themselves were in question. Practicing a screen version like this one will not change your result at MEPS, and it is not meant to. It is meant to tell you whether to plan for this.

How common is this?

Roughly 8 to 10 percent of men and under 1 percent of women have some form of color vision deficiency. That is about one in twelve male applicants. You are not in unusual territory and the system is built to handle it.

Why is this test generated instead of showing real Ishihara plates?

Two reasons. The published Ishihara plates are copyrighted, and a generated plate can carry a different number every run, so the test is not something you can memorize. The color relationships follow the same principle the real plates use: the numeral sits across a red-green confusion line and the dot brightness is randomized so the figure cannot be read by lightness alone.
